Ann L Lee is currently Executive Director, Bioprocess R&D responsible for the Vaccine BioProcess Engineering R&D and BioPurification Development departments at Merck Research Laboratories in West Point, Pennsylvania and Rahway, New Jersey, respectively. She is responsible for leading the development of purification processes for vaccines, therapeutic proteins, natural products, and biocatalysis intermediates. The scope of these responsibilities include creative process design, developing process monitoring assays, preparation of human clinical bulk supplies, scale-up/process validation and transfer/start-up of processes to manufacturing. Additionally, she has been project leader for a number of vaccine products coordinating the activities between basic research, process development, manufacturing and marketing. She joined Merck & Co., Inc. in 1989 after receiving her B.S. from Cornell University in chemical engineering, and a Ph.D. from Yale University. Lee is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Chemical Society, Society of Women Engineers and Sigma Xi. She was also elected a member of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. She has been an organizer of numerous conferences including the leading international conference on downstream purification, Recovery of Biological Products 10, and is frequently invited to speaker and lecture at various conferences and Universities. She is Associate Editor of the British journal Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry. She is chair of the Cornell Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Advisory Board, and serves on other advisory boards as well. She is actively involved in company-wide recruiting efforts, mentors high school and college students, and is the proud mother of pre-school twins, Alexa and Michael.
