On December 3, 1994, gas leaked from a tank of methylisocyanate (MIC) at plant owned and operated by Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL). Methylisocyanate is a volatile, colorless liquid with a strong, sharp odor that causes tears. It is used in making pesticides, polyurethane foams and plastics. This liquid can affect you when breathed in and by passing through your skin. It may also cause mutations, an asthma-like allergy. Higher exposure can cause a build-up of fluids in the lungs. Consequently, several thousands of people pass away or suffered permanent or partial disability.
