Did you know that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has a cutting edge research center right here in suburban Philadelphia? Located in the Wyndmoor-Glenside area, the Eastern Regional Research Center is part of the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service. The center was recognized in 2007 as a National Historic Chemical Landmark and was visited this summer by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. The USDA’s Wyndmoor research center’s focus includes Dairy Processing and Products; Crop Conversion Science and Engineering; Food Safety Intervention Technologies; Fats, Oils and Animal-Coproducts; Microbial Food Safety; and Microbial Biophysics and Residue Chemistry and Core Technologies. Among the center’s many accomplishments is the development of Process Simulation (Cost Engineering) for Biofuels Processes. Now, the AIChE Delaware Valley Section has been invited for a rare tour of this renowned research center on Friday, November 13. The scientists and engineers at the facility perform pioneering research in sustainable bioenergy, food safety, and health-promoting foods. We’ll focus on their biotechnology research and will see the center’s pilot plants and fermentation lab. Tour topics include: Supercritical CO2 Pasteurization; Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass; Innovations in Dairy Research; Biodiesel from Natural Oil; and Fermentation. After the tour, we’ll meet up at Brittingham’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in nearby Lafayette Hill for an AIChE-DVS happy-hour and networking social, including a buffet dinner. The tour starts at 3 p.m., followed by social and dinner. Even if you can’t make the tour, why not join us after work for food, drink, and socializing? The
tour is limited to 25, so sign up now! Don’t miss your chance to see an inside
look at the research done by the USDA! There are no limits on who can attend the
networking social/dinner. |
